In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) during which the process of fertilizing eggs with sperm is done outside of the human body. Once the eggs are fertilized, the resulting embryos are placed in the woman’s uterus hoping for a successful pregnancy.
It is recommended that you pursue IVF after one year of trying for a pregnancy without any result. Only certain groups of patients who are infertile are suitable for IVF. The treatment was originally developed for women who have damaged or blocked fallopian tubes.
However, it has been shown that these techniques will also increase the chance of pregnancy in other groups of patients including those where there is no obvious cause. Currently IVF is also seeked in the cases of gender selection, where a healthy couple is looking for a specific gender.
The donor undergoes ovarian stimulation to encourage the production of multiple eggs.
The donor's endometrium, or uterine lining, is prepared for optimal embryo implantation.
Eggs are carefully retrieved from the donor's ovaries under sedation or anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort.
Once the eggs are retrieved and fertilized in the laboratory, the resulting embryos are transferred into the recipient's uterus.
After a designated period, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the embryo transfer was successful.
Finally, an ultrasound is performed to confirm the presence of a gestational sac and fetal heartbeat, marking the beginning of an exciting journey towards parenthood.
